SAN JOSE — Students and friends on Friday marched to the intersection where their friend and teammate died after being hit by a bus while riding a scooter early that morning. Camdan McWright, a San Jose State freshman football player, was killed Friday morning when his electric scooter collided with a school bus just blocks from campus.  The university confirmed the 18-year-old’s identity hours after he died in the 6:51 a.m. collision near South 10th and Reed streets. SACRAMENTO (CBS SF) — A California bill that would help protect kids from ID theft is one step closer to becoming law. California Assemblyman Mike Gatto introduced state legislation  after reading a series of blog posts I’d written  about my years of reporting on child ID theft and struggling to freeze my own child’s credit. This week, the California bill passed its first test, sailing through the California Assembly’s Banking and Finance Committee with a 12-0 vote. The legislation doesn’t face much opposition as child ID theft is a bipartisan issue. In fact, at least 23 other states have passed similar laws acknowledging the unmatched protection of the child credit freeze. The laws require that the credit bureaus allow parents to proactively place a security freeze (aka credit freeze) on their child’s Social Security number. The bad news is that the credit bureaus won’t let you use it to protect your kids! SACRAMENTO (CBS SF) — California parents now have a new tool to protect kids from identity theft thanks to a new law just signed on Friday by Gov. Jerry Brown. A credit freeze — or security freeze — is the best tool to protect anyone from financial id theft. It prevents anyone from running a credit check or opening a credit account with your social security number. For years, it has only been available for adults. Studies show kids can be at even greater risk for id theft because they don’t yet have a credit history. Since KPIX 5 began reporting on the topic, Equifax agreed to voluntarily allow child credit freezes. But Experian and Trans Union still refuse to do so unless state law requires it or the child is already a victim. (KPIX 5) — Consumers spent $1.4 billion on ID protection subscriptions last year.  Now, the FTC warns that some of those companies are marketing fear and false promises to get you to pay for services you can likely get for free. When Al Tokuhama got an email from Comcast telling him that his password had been changed, he immediately thought he’d been hacked. Though, after an hour on the phone, he says that fear turned to frustration when he began to suspect the password reset email was a fear tactic designed to get him sign up for the ID theft protection services Comcast was selling. “They said the final step to being secure was to get this Identity Guard,” said Tokuhama. “I thought it was very unethical what they did.” Fear Is A Good Marketing Tactic The Federal Trade Commission’s David Newman said he can’t comment on Comcast, but points out that fear is an increasingly common marketing tactic among ID theft and credit protection companies.
