Ranked teams

No. 1 Serra 36, Valley Christian 7

The top team in the Bay Area breezed by Valley Christian (1-7, 0-5) on Saturday afternoon, with the Padres (8-0, 5-0) leading 36-0 by halftime. Junior quarterback Maealiuaki Smith started the scoring with an 18-yard pass to wide receiver Grant McGovern. His second touchdown pass was a 25-yard fade to Jayden Weber, and his third of the half went to Weber again for 45-yards, this time on a touch pass off a jet sweep. By the time Smith threw his fourth touchdown of the half to Seamus Gilmartin, the rout was on. The Padres took their foot off the proverbial pedal in the second half. Serra plays at St. Ignatius next Friday and Valley Christian hosts Archbishop Mitty. – Joseph Dycus

Johnathan Guerrero intercepted a pass to set up De La Salle’s second touchdown and then returned an interception 67 yards for a TD that made it 28-0 in the second quarter. After the third touchdown, De La Salle’s Kaleo Augustin was injured on the ensuing kickoff and taken by ambulance to a hospital after receiving medical attention on the field for several minutes. Augustin walked to the stretcher on his own before being put in the ambulance, De La Salle’s broadcasters told viewers on the internet stream. Augustin was cleared at Kaiser and returned to the sideline before the game ended. Cooper Flanagan’s interception early in the first quarter led to a short TD run by Dylan Greeson for a 7-0 lead. Charles Greer’s 25-yard run widened the advantage to 14-0 and Toa Faavae’s 9-yard quarterback keeper stretched the lead to 21-0 with two minutes left in the first quarter. Aragon (3-5, 0-4) hosts Half Moon Bay on Friday. — Glenn Reeves

St. Ignatius 24, No. 10 Archbishop Mitty 21

One week after a dramatic fourth-quarter surge propelled Mitty to a victory over Bellarmine, the Monarchs were unable to do the same against St. Ignatius. After Mitty pulled even 21-21 at Foothill College when Ty Yoshida, filling in for injured Wills Towers, connected with Danny Scudero in the corner of the end zone from 3 yards out with 4:38 left, St. Ignatius answered. The Wildcats got into scoring range and won when Cooper Lucey kicked an 18-yard field goal with a second left. St. Ignatius was coming off a 10-0 loss last week to rival Sacred Heart Cathedral in the Bruce-Mahoney game. The victory improved SI’s record to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the WCAL. Mitty fell to 6-2, 3-2. Next Friday, SI will play host to top-ranked Serra and Mitty will visit Valley Christian. — Darren Sabedra

The Wolves (6-2, 1-1 EBAL Mountain) charged to a 21-0 lead midway through the second quarter but were unable to put away their stubborn visitors from Amador Valley (4-4, 0-3). John Pau Mendoza sandwiched touchdown runs of 7 and 2 yards around a 13-yard scoring pass from QB Luke Baker to Trevor Scott as San Ramon Valley threatened to turn the game into a rout six minutes before halftime. But Amador Valley made it 21-7 with less than a minute left until intermission, then it scored again with four minutes to go in the third quarter, cutting SRV’s lead to seven points. It remained 21-14 until the final minute of play, when Austin Shelton kicked a 40-yard field goal to give the Wolves some breathing room. Baker’s TD toss was his 25th of the season. Eight have gone to Scott. Amador Valley has fallen on hard times after starting the season 4-1. The Dons have lost all three of their EBAL Mountain games, and next Friday they host De La Salle. Amador Valley might need to win one of two remaining games to be assured of a bid to the North Coast Section playoffs. The Dons host California in their regular-season final on Nov. 5. — Mike Lefkow

In the second half, Isaiah Tuiono ran for a short touchdown, and Declan Quinn returned a fumble for another score. St. Francis added a couple more touchdowns later on as it got the shutout. St. Francis hosts Bellarmine next Friday, and Riordan hosts Sacred Heart Cathedral next Saturday afternoon. – Joseph Dycus

No. 14 Acalanes 48, Benicia 7

Acalanes scored on the third play of the game, then added four more first-quarter touchdowns en route to an easy win over outmanned Benicia. The Dons are 7-1 overall and 2-1 in DAL Foothill play, with the only blemish being a three-point loss to sixth-ranked Campolindo last week. Trevor Rogers and Ethan Torres caught touchdown passes, Ellis Burger and Jack Miller had rushing scores, and George Churchill ran a partially blocked punt back 30 yards to highlight the evening for the Dons. Benicia (2-6, 0-3) lost its sixth game in a row after starting the season 2-0. Acalanes should get a little stiffer test next week when it hosts Miramonte. – Mike Lefkow

RL Miller caught a touchdown pass, returned an interception 47 yards for another score and had a 22-yard fumble return for six more points to lead the Irish (5-3, 3-2 West Catholic Athletic League). Miller, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound linebacker/wide receiver, is a 247sports three-star recruit who remains committed to Arizona State despite what will be a coaching change next season. Bellarmine (3-5, 2-3), which lost for the third time in a row, was playing without leading rusher Ben Pfaff. Still, the Bells led 10-2 midway through the second quarter, but SHC closed to 10-8 on a 64-yard touchdown run by Kendric Sanders. Miller’s pick-6 then put the home team ahead 15-10 at the half. Bellarmine struck first early in the third period to go back in front 17-15, but the Irish scored the game’s final 15 points, including the fumble return by Miller. Jake Hanson and Ben Broch scored touchdowns for the Bells. SHC’s victory over Bellarmine was its third between the teams in the last four years after the Bells had won 10 in a row between 2008-2017. — Mike Lefkow

Las Lomas 38, No. 21 Miramonte 21

The Knights (4-4, 2-1) rallied from a halftime deficit to beat a Miramonte (6-2, 2-1) team that had scored more than 30 points in every game but one this season. Senior Adam Towell ran for a touchdown, and sophomore Kaden Lagaya ran in for two more scores. Alex Lisi hauled in a touchdown reception on fourth-and-three on the goal line, and Nick Barrett kicked a 40-yard field goal. While Miramonte’s UCLA commit Luke Duncan threw for three short touchdown passes, he was also flustered by defensive back Emmanuel Karnley, who had two interceptions and would have had a pick-six had it not been called back because of a penalty. Karnley also ran for a touchdown on a fly sweep. Las Lomas has a chance to force a three-way tie for the league lead next Friday if it can win at Campolindo. Miramonte travels to Acalanes next week. — Joseph Dycus

No. 22 Liberty 35, No. 25 Antioch 6

Senior quarterback Nate Bell threw for three touchdowns and rushed for two more in a surprisingly easy road win at Antioch. The Lions (5-3, 2-1 Bay Valley Athletic League), in their past three games, lost to No. 2 Pittsburg by two points and walloped Freedom and Antioch by a combined 61 points. They are quickly becoming one of the teams to keep an eye on as the season heads toward the section and state playoffs. Bell, who according to 247sports has offers from Army and Eastern Washington, connected for touchdowns twice to Deuce Carr and once to Jamar Searcy. The 5-foot-9, 170-pounder has accounted for 1,939 yards and 20 touchdowns between his running and passing this season. Liberty should assure itself a winning season next week when it hosts Deer Valley. Antioch (3-5, 2-1) continued its inconsistent play with its one-sided loss to the Lions. Last week the Panthers surprised Heritage 23-14. – Mike Lefkow

East Bay

American 28, Kennedy-Fremont 14

A hard-hitting performance by American’s (2-6, 1-2) defense snapped a four-game losing streak with a decisive victory over Kennedy-Fremont (3-5, 1-2). Safety Cruz Madrigal, linebacker Michael Palu and defensive end Mamoun Hamza all stayed disciplined against what coach Bryan Blackmon called a shifty run-heavy offense. Running back Jonathan Tuagalu ran for two touchdowns, and quarterback Danino Corsis ran for two more as American’s rushing attack did enough to complement its stout defense. American hosts San Lorenzo next Friday, while Kennedy travels to Alameda next Saturday. — Joseph Dycus

Berkeley 44, Hayward 41

In one of the most thrilling games of the season, Berkeley erased a five-point deficit on the road in the fourth quarter when Drew Henderson threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Dashiell Guerreiro Ramos and Jackson Harris completed a pass to Benjamin Thurman for the two-point conversion that made it 44-41. The defense held from there, recovering a fumble with about a minute to play as the Yellow Jackets (5-3, 3-0) stayed alone in first place in the MVAL/WACC Mission Division. Hayward is 3-5, 1-2. The home team led 20-8 after the first quarter and 34-30 at halftime. Zachariah Norton’s 10-yard TD run stretched Hayward’s lead to 41-30 in the third quarter. Henderson’s 23-yard TD pass to Jalen Harris cut the deficit to 41-36. But Berkeley didn’t convert the two-point play, leaving the margin at five points as the fourth quarter began.
